Clarinex and Claritin, the popular allergy drugs, have been linked to 15 cases of hypospadias in Sweden. Hypospadias is a rare birth defect that causes the deformation in the opening of the penis being on the underside of the male organ.
As a result, the European equivalent of the FDA annouced that that it was changing the label of Schering-Plough's allergy drug Clarinex to warn that the drug should not be used by pregnant women.
The agency's scientific committee has been reviewing the drug's safety after authorities in Sweden reported 15 cases of hypospadias. The malformation was seen in boys born to women who had been using the company's top-selling allergy drug Claritin but because this is similar to Clarinex both products are under scrutiny.
