The FDA announced that the popular multiple sclerosis drug Avonex could be linked to a higher incidence of depression, suicide, allergic reactions and liver problems and required the drug's manufacturer to add new warnings to the drug's label.
The FDA stated that patients taking Avonex were more likely to suffer a number of psychological conditions. Additionally the FDA warned that Avonex can worsen the condition of patients already suffering from depression or other psychiatric symptoms.
The FDA also warned that Avonex can cause liver problems and severe life threatening allergic conditions known as anaphylaxis.
The revised Avonex label reads: "Depression and suicide have been reported to occur with increased frequency in patients receiving interferon compounds, including Avonex."
Avonex is manufactured by Biogen and attained blockbuster status in 2002 by reaching sales of $1 billion. Avonex is Biogen's main revenue generator.
