Jeep Uncontrollable Reverse Accidents...

   The Chrysler Group, a unit of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, recently announced the recall of 1.6 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer sport-utility vehicles produced from 1993 through 1998.

   The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had been investigating Jeep Grand Cherokee that suddenly and unintentionally shifting into reverse and then driving uncontrollably backwards.

   It is believed that the Jeep Grand Cherokee has a defect that causes a hidden internal shaft lever within the transmission to rest on a flat space between reverse and park. This defect can make it appear that the SUV is in park, but it is really in hydraulic neutral or "false park mode".

   Light vibrations of movement can then cause this faulty internal shaft lever to slip into reverse gear and this can happen even if the engine is turned off.

   It is estimated that the NHTSA and DaimlerChrysler have received almost 1000 complaint about "inadvertent rollway in reverse" incidents in Jeep Grand Cherokees.
